Bodhgaya Europ-Asian Center

How it happened and what it is like

Bodhgaya

More than 2500 years ago Siddartha Gautam achieved the spiritual state of Buddha at the foot of the tree of Bodhi. This took place on the banks of the river Nyaranjana in what is now Bodhgaya in the state of Bihar in North East India.

Lord Buddha taught the path that leads to inner peace and the end of suffering.

Bhodgaya is the most important place of pilgrimage for buddhists and for those who respect and admire Buddhism. As such more and more Europeans are visiting Bhodhgaya.

The centre, built on a plot of 1500 square metres, is situated in Siddarthanagar at the entrance to Bhodgaya, and is only 15 minutes walk from the great Bodhi stupa.

How it happened

It was the joint idea of a young Bengali Budhhist, Dipayan Barua, and a French Buddhist old lady, Péma (Mireille) Dartiguepeyrou his Proposer

They are creating a centre both of welcome and meditation, that works with European Buddhist centres and their members.

When it happened

The land was bought in September 2000. Building started in January 2001, and the first rooms were opened in January 2002.

Building

The Bhodgaya Europe-Asia Guest House consists for the moment of a large multi purpose entry hall and eight guest rooms, each with two beds and their own toilet and shower. Breakfast can be provided, or you can make it yourself in the communal kitchen.

We plan to build a first floor consisting of more rooms and a second floor for a temple and rooms for the use of visiting spiritual masters. The latter will transform it into a genuine Buddhist centre.

We are creating a committee to run the centre and to support further work.

May all people interested join us !

Activities

The guest house and centre will become a European presence in this great Buddhist place of pilgrimage.

Teaching and courses lead by Lamas of different schools of Bhuddism will be organised in collaboration with the Yogi Ling hermitage.
